All animals deserve their turn in art

I am currently preparing work for a new show in April which is themed upon African wildlife. Although I love all forms of nature, whether it big and beautiful or tiny and terrible, I must say that I have always had more of a liking for the unusual and overlooked.
The subjects for the work in this exhibition are of course mostly the more commonly seen wildlife of the big African plains. But I have been searching out the more unusual as well, if for nothing else but to satisfy myself.
Amongst these drawings there is a particular piece I am very happy with. The picture is of two young male mongoose wrestling in the dust. I was lucky enough to observe this first hand, watching the two young warriors pushing and shoving each other in a bout that was almost akin to a sumo wrestling match. I assume the fighting , that seemed fairly playful, was nothing more than practice for the serious business of male dominance for mating that will become so important later in life.
I have added a small jpeg of the picture please excuse its quality, a better one will come later. I don't know if the picture will appeal to anyone, but I do know it brought me great pleasure in creating it.

For those of you lucky enough to be able to get away to the stunning Oxfordshire village of Woodstock in April, I hope you will find time to pay the show a visit. I can't promise there will be the piles of elephant pictures, which have become so normal at events like these, but I can promise that maybe there will be the odd piece of unusual nature that many of us are now growing to enjoy and love.

The show will be at Iona House Gallery, Woostock, Oxfordshire, from Sat 26th April (opening day) and will run until 1st June.

I will also be signing copies of my book 'Pencils Patience and Primates '.
